When we start a fitness programme, we ONLY tend to think of the physical benefits. However what we don’t realise is that one of the major benefits is the health of your brain.

Think of it like this:

Have you ever stopped working out – due to injury, illness or travel? You realise how quickly you can lose cardiovascular endurance and muscle mass.

The same principle applies to your brain. Regular exercise keeps your mind sharp, decreases the chances of Alzheimer’s and dementia and reduces your stress levels.

If you don’t exercise now, your brain will probably shrink

There has been several studies which suggest that not exercising in your 30s or 40s can lead to ‘brain shrinking’. The study conducted assessed participants’ fitness levels 20 years apart – the people with lower exercise capacities were shown to have smaller brains, as compared to those who were physically fit.

The concluded findings stated that lower cardiovascular fitness and elevated exercise blood pressure and heart rate responses are associated with smaller brain volumes. Exercise has many benefits and it can be confidently correlated to linking an active lifestyle to better brain health.
